With Aqua Engineering you, your business and your customers are kept safe from Legionnella.
An outbreak of Legionnaires Disease can affect your staff, put your customers at risk and shut down your business so handling the risk assessment shouldn’t be simply a paper exercise.
When it comes to Legionella Risk Assessment every business wants two things. First, to stay legally compliant with the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 and COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health). Second, to ensure the water used by staff, clients and customers is safe to use.
Legionnaire’s is a highly debilitating bacterial infection spread through amongst other things, poorly maintained water supplies. Its seriousness should not be underestimated, infections can often leave people deaf or blind, potentially with lost limbs and can cause comas and brain damage. Recovery can take 12 – 18 months with a death rate of 10-12%.
An LRA is a comprehensive assessment of all your water systems by a qualified assessor, looking for hazards and evaluating risks. Aqua are experts in this process and check out everywhere water flows in your building – there’s a lot more going on behind the scenes to allow you to turn on the hot and cold taps!
A thorough technical report with all the results of the water testing
A plain language bespoke Management Summary Report which tells you where any problems and/or potential problems lie and what you need to do,
A bespoke logbook in which you will need to record your own ongoing tests. This is a critical document for ongoing risk management
A CD Toolkit – all the key documents on a disc, plus legislation and guidance, photos we’ve taken and, essentially, an up to date schematic plan of your water system(s).
Additionally, when a client achieves a Low Risk rating, we give you a framed certificate and an e-version for your website. Our LRAs have been praised by the HSE for their quality.
The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 dictate that employers must identify any hazards and levels of risk to the health and safety of their employees while they’re at work. Most businesses will also have visitors or customers onsite, all of whom will have varying degrees of susceptibility to Legionnaire’s Disease.
Based on our years of experience Aqua Engineering recommends that all businesses undertake a LRA regardless of the number of employees. Bacteria is does not discriminate between different size businesses.
Quite a part of the risk to life there are potentially huge financial costs not having a valid LRA in place. This can include situations where no cases were reported but the business failed to reduce the risk.
Where there are cases or outbreaks, particularly deaths, and reasonable precautions have not been taken fines are substantial – the amount relative to the economic ‘size’ of the business.
Those responsible for the water systems can be charged with Corporate Manslaughter and face prison. The Health and Safety Executive can close a business down until remediation is completed satisfactorily. Further costs can potentially include lawsuits and long-lasting reputation damage.
A Legionella Risk Assessment is a ‘living document’ as such when water systems change on your site(s) your LRA should also be updated.
Aqua recommends a new assessment every two years, though we also offer inexpensive annual reviews and water sampling. Aqua keeps your water supply safe and legal.
